Tribal Empowerment & Livelihoods promotion programme of Vikash in Joda Block of Keonjhar district is dedicated to uplifting tribal communities in Keonjhar district. The program objective is to support sustainable livelihood initiatives for marginalized and rural tribal communities. Among its many interventions, the story of Dilip Munda stands out as a testament to how targeted support can transform lives.
Gandhalapada, located in Joda block, is home to 118 households, with the majority belonging to Scheduled Tribes. Life here is challenging, especially for families like Dilip’s, who struggle daily to meet basic needs. Dilip is a 50 year old Person with Physical Disability resident of Gandhalapada village, whose earning solely relies on labor work. However, the income is barely enough to support their family of three.
Recognizing the family’s vulnerability, the Lattakochha Village Committee brought their situation to the attention of VIKASH NGO.
A thorough assessment confirmed the need for intervention, and it was decided that establishing a grocery unit would provide Dilip with a sustainable source of income. The location chosen for the shop was ideal; it is close to the local market, ensuring good customer flow and business growth potential.
Vikash facilitated the process to levearage the resources from the Government and Dilip received essential materials and working capital. A total of ₹54,000 was provided for inventory and setup, while an additional ₹6,000 was given as working capital. With this support, Dilip launched his grocery unit right in his village, near the bustling market.
The impact was immediate and profound. Dilip’s grocery shop now generates a daily income of ₹1,000–1,200, translating to a monthly earning of ₹20,000–25,000. This steady income has not only improved his family’s standard of living but also allowed him to provide for his children’s needs and future investments.
Dilip Munda’s journey from daily wage laborer to successful shop owner is a shining example of how community-driven initiatives and targeted financial support can empower the most vulnerable. His grocery unit is now a vital resource for the village, contributing to local economic growth and setting a powerful example of self-reliance.
