In the remote village of Topadihi, Joda Block, Keonjhar District, most families struggle with poverty and limited opportunities. Jema Bankira, a highly educated woman with a PGDCA qualification, was among those facing severe economic hardship. Despite her education, daily wage labor was her only source of income, making it difficult to support her family. Her situation was further compounded by physical challenges, placing her in the “poorest of the poor” category during the village’s well being ranking analysis.

Recognizing her determination and potential, the Village Development Association (VDA), with support from Vikash Organisation under the OTELP PLUS project, stepped in. After thorough consultation and approval, Jema received Rs. 1,00,000/- as Income Generation Activity (IGA) support. With this, she constructed a dedicated room for her Xerox unit and purchased essential equipment, including a computer system, Xerox machine, chairs, and tables.
The intervention was transformative. In 2023-24, Jema launched her Xerox business, providing photocopying and related services to the villagers. Her shop quickly became a vital resource for the community, meeting daily documentation needs and saving villagers the trouble of traveling long distances for such services. As a result, Jema’s income stabilized, enabling her to support her family and plan for her children’s future.
Beyond financial stability, Jema’s journey has inspired others in her village, especially women and differently-abled individuals. Her success story demonstrates the power of targeted support and community-driven development. With ongoing encouragement from the VDA, VIKASH experts, and the Department of SC & ST Development, Jema plans to expand her business, further solidifying her role as a budding entrepreneur and role model.
This case study highlights the impact of empowering marginalized individuals through skill-based support and inclusive development. Jema Bankira’s Xerox unit not only improved her own livelihood but also contributed to the social and economic wellbeing of her entire community.
