With assistance from NORAD, Vikash
implemented a pilot project on solid waste management in Bhubaneswar,
known as the temple city of Orissa, an eastern province of India.
The experience and expertise gained from the project have inspired
the organisation to take up the large scale managementof
solid waste in different urban areas. The speciality of Vikash
lies in establishing low cost sustainable scientific waste management
systems in urban areas.

As a lack of awareness on the
part of the urban dwellers was the most potent reason for the
improper management of solid waste leading to innumerable health
hazards, Vikash resorted to an innovative awareness
programme that included door-to-door campaigning, an elocution
and art-

competition, youth jamboree, women
meetings and rallies. During the process, Vikash has institutionalised its
experience and expertise in solid waste management through
an independent organisation called GREEN
CIRCLE, which is committed to a clean, which is committed
to a clean, greenand beautiful habitat. Besides directly working
in the field of solid waste management, it extends its services
to different Urban Local Bodies and other agencies in this field.
It is worthwhile to note that this is a completely unique initiative
in large scale solid waste management in India.
