| Vikash
is undertaking construction of individual houses for the very poor
households; school buildings; and community shelters in the cyclone
and flood areas. We use innovative materials while undertaking
such constructions. Efforts are always made to transport the
technology to the community. We have a team of engineers,
architects, construction managers and trained masons under command
to undertake the construction activities.
The centers are producing
alternative building materials for construction of cost-effective
houses. They also provide employment to the local population.

Vikash
believes that NGOs, given their welfare nature, have a limitation
in providing quality housing products at an appropriate
cost in a business-like operation. Hence Vikash felt the
need to establish a construction organisation - Shelter
- which would take up housing and other construction activities.
Shelter provides housing and related services
to Vikash and its clients.

In
June 2002 Vikash, Shelter had completed 2 school-cum-cyclone shelters
in two of the most inaccessible areas of the Puri District, the
villages of Jahnibalia and Balibasta. The project
was funded by SDC and the work was valued at Rs.11.5 lakh
and Rs.13.0 lakh respectively. People from both villages were
mobilized to help with the construction.
|
|
The
buildings covered an area of approximately 220 sq m., had 5 large
classrooms, a large roof area with parapet and a water harvesting
tank to provide fresh water during a cyclone or flood. Jahnibalia
was built on a raised plinth of 1.5m. and Balibasta on
stilts 3.5 mtrs high to be above the recorded flood level. Both
buildings were designed to withstand both cyclone and earthquake.

The
community centre at Patasundarpur is now complete and is ready
to be inaugurated. The building was funded by Kalinga
Vysya Samaj (Delhi) and valued at Rs. 3.5 lakh.

The
construction of 23 low cost cyclone proof houses in Davar village
is now nearing completion. An outdoor latrine has been
provided for each house and road upgrading is also being carried
out. This project is funded by Basaid.
